Constant Month April come Come she will Did you ever know You could sit so still Or find such fascination In your windowsill You think it’s been a while Since I’ve seen my keys And you think it’s been a while Since I’ve seen Anyone at all The winter was mild We buried a child Safety crossing On patrol Grab a rail Wash your hands Never fail Take a hold Take a hold April goes Go she must Did she ever tell you about her Mom and dad They sound fun Some other spring I’ll try to allow But I still cling To broken blossoms On the path In the mist With a mask With a moustache Take a hold Take a hold Touch me there Touch me there

Vacuum Harder I’m singin’ this song I’m weighing in here For the ages For the ages I’ll put it in a spacecraft Or bounce it off a satellite Or outta the mouths Of sages It’s all children’s choruses And righteous rages It’s that old devil sympathy Coming alive on the pages It’s funny to think I’m kidding And it is funny Till it’s not So, here’s some song The proverbial All I got Johnny’s in the basement Then he’s in the hallway Drinkin’ a glass a tea Like some skip trace Sid Vicious I hear old Egyptians Singin’ My Way Singin’ My Way When do we leave? The dawn of rock and roll When do we stop? When we go wrong Sing it with me God bless the country and the blues And the rap And all that soft rock Coming down like rain Ah Afternoon Delight Me and the ofays Singin along with the O’Jays And the T D U Maybe I could be you Yes, I could be you If only I vacuum A little harder Harder Harder

Zoom* 02:48 video
Zoom So, all those years ago When you moved away Did you ever think There would be this day When there was no one left To run away from? When there was no one left To run away from No one left

Hey Mister Johnson Old Mister Johnson I pass by your house Almost every day Old Mister Johnson When you’re out and about I might say hey But I don’t stop They say you were born in that house They say your father was a strong man And your mother was loved by one and all You were a good boy – you came in when she called You came back when they were called up yonder And you stayed Later you had a young wife They say she took her own life They said some terrible things Over the years The kind of things that Make kids laugh And bring the old women to tears Hey Mister Johnson It’s been a while since I’ve seen you It’s been a while since I’ve seen any lights on Newspapers piling up on the porch This doesn’t look too good No not at all Hey Mister Johnson Hey Mister Johnson Hey Mister Johnson

Chaz 05:39 video
Chaz Let’s recall summer days - more than fond Bring ‘em back Long and blond Every night Running back home Before the last streetlights come on Come on come on Let’s talk a walk in the woods It’s only us Let’s recall when we could After the bus It felt so right Just to walk down our street With our hearts full on Full on full on Bikes make us right And matching jackets make a gang We frightened no one We never really wanted to Just our dream and the sun Just our dream and the sun Making our own fun Getting caught Made to run Me and you One is two Two is one Bring me here Take me now So sincere Such a pal Such a love Such a light I wish I could I wish I might I think I will You said alright They called you Charles They called you Chuckie and Charlie I called you Chaz And since that day Nobody else has what Chaz has

Case 03:12 video
Case The first thing you learn Bound to make you laugh Bound to make you burn When they throw your baby out With the bath Reeking of spirits On a Sunday Ya better back that train All the way up To the station Call you Monday The next thing you know All your kinfolk are brawlin’ Uh oh Blotto Macho Here we go Breaking glass And your little auntie’s hearts Breaking the glass In the doll case Reeking of spirits On a Sunday Ya better back that train All the way up To the station Call you Monday The first thing you smell The first thing that lingers Is some avuncular asshole (Don’t ya say it) Ah come on Pull my finger

Corollary Here come the roses Here come the daisies Here come the folks From the city Muafuggas crazy Do you need a drink Perhaps a swab A bed like an organism Lets get captured And absorbed See the flower Petals open All Georgia blossom And Cezanne stem See the bowl of sugar The liquid wash of now Let’s zoom in on them Find a safe distance From which to be used To catch fire And sex in a thimble to laugh At the sucking black shape You’re distraught You’re bereaved Your stomach is extra acidic You think there’s life beyond The bridge Life beyond the bridge It’s all America out there Past the toll booths It’s all America out there Past the hounds Life beyond the bridge It’s all America out there Beyond the toll booths And past the hounds It’s all America out there Out there Out there Out there We sing Happy Birthday To our best gal Lets sing it 200 more times One candle burned The other didn’t I exhale By my window

Temporary Name I asked his name He wouldn’t say He shook my hand And looked away Said he hadn’t come to stay He made a joke about Lucifer And we both laughed I shook my head By way of sayin’ I know you We talked a lot of gas Then we leveled our gaze Locked eyes As they say He says I’ll tell you my name again He says I’ll tell you my name again He says I’ll tell you my name again If you remember to ask me Tomorrow I asked his name He wouldn’t say He shook my hand And looked away Said he hadn’t come to stay
9.
Unattended I don’t need to know your grabby reasons And I don’t need to read your diary Cuz your face is an open book That leaves me hangin’ Like 500 pages of 5-digit phone numbers Driving down a coastal road Unattended Except by little white clouds I drive a Corvair The little engine that could I don’t need to know About your family romance What are ya gonna do at a 4 way stop Call the Hearst newspapers Call a cop Join the SLA For all I care Driving down a coastal highway Unattended Except by little white clouds I drive a Corvair The little engine that could I suppose many things are less boring than a well-traveled person Like we don’t all out prowling on our own Don’t give me the noise from England Leave me to gather roses And scatter ashes On my own green ocean Near my own blue town In my mourning gown

A Seventies Street I found all my luck in a coffee can I left my knife upside down In an empty jar Thus far Say Nothing Do Nothing Take Nothing I left my mutation in a burned - out man Scrawled across the dark Even in my ascendancy I still take a knee And watch it all The lunar pull The looming mucus Say Nothing (work your body) Do Nothing (pay no mind) Take Nothing (leave nothing behind) I left my thumbprint on your hip And the print of half a finger A life affirming gesture Unlike the inward plunge Step into your legend Tempt it further Say Nothing (hip break and fall) Do Nothing (kinetic shiver) Take Nothing (well maybe that signature work over there) I walk a seventies street Like a timeless land I’m all dented clothes And rusted auto parts Shaking off skin Yellow pink and orange Say Nothing (we’re gonna have a mess) Do Nothing (we’re gonna have a fire) Take Nothing (I’ll take that gun for hire)

Hate it Here We treat each other so gentle Later in life Why don’t we start earlier And maybe And just maybe Save a life To be arrive as a baby To be here as a child To be welcomed As the second son And held up to the sky To be out of the view of the eye On the back of our money Just for a moment To be late Late for dinner Way past dark To be scorned To be a fuck up To be made to wait for my Punishment I’m with the sea now I’m with the trees now I am the world being born To be outta the army To be out of a job And back in the arms of my country Where it rains unfelt testimony About my role in the war I’m with the sky now I’m with the stones now I am the world being born My brain’s on fire It’s lacerated I am the world torn apart To go out in a sack And never come back To go out in a hail of Hail Marys Sister Mary Don’t ya leave me I was the second son I was the second son I was the second son I’m with the sky now I’m with the seas now I am the world being born My brain’s on fire It’s lacerated I am the world torn apart Born born Everyday Don’t listen to me when I say I hate it here

released May 1, 2020

My brother Steve (11/2/51 – 4/10/20) was the second son. Tall, handsome, athletic, funny and for a time, a terrific older brother. He was the daredevil, with (dreams of) cool cars and (actual) motorcycle crashes. He taught me Kung Fu and Buffalo Springfield, and when he moved away, left me his vast library of science fiction - whetting a life-long appetite for reading. He also taught me the value of acting the fool when all else fails. Seemingly born to be a fuckup, but with a heart of gold, and ready with the big heroic gesture - like wrestling our mother's little dog out of the jaws of a giant Great Dane – and on the day we buried our father no less. An Eagle Scout, a veteran, an outdoorsman and adventurer – his last big trip before the final plunge – to London and Liverpool. Shake it up baby, twist and shout. RIP. (Kevin Lay, 5/5/2020)
