Out of Orby ° On moving sidewalks There’s still lousy hawkers With everything, just everything You need In sky blue eyes I see traffic signs To everywhere, just everywhere We used to go You checked the right box, right You went to detox, right You make paper birds Until the sun sets On everything you know In an overgrown passage With shady ticket takers Showing everyone, yea everyone Just where they’re gonna sit and keep still Behind low fences The meds lean so hard On everything Just everything And I plead I checked the right box, right I did the detox, right I made those damn Paper birds Until my fingers cried And I don’t know why And I don’t know why I just can’t remember I just can’t remember Heal me now Please comfort me Don’t fail me now Please come for me ©2020 All Rights Reserved

East Wing * Downtown A long time ago (before I was me) I saw your face reflected in a mirror You were looking at someone behind you in the room (Not me) Oh, how I wished it was me That was forever ago I haven’t thought of you ‘til now I wonder where you are I’d look you up If I could remember your name ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Underscore ° Let’s say the tall one cooks While the other read books Let's say they moved away Just like that, in between looks To the left is the writer And he don’t start till late With the overhead burning Like he’s got an idea Yea, one that he don’t hate On the stoop is dear Carol And her series of mutts Like her, they sit and they stay Until sun sets Or she gets another one She gets another one And another one And another one Dear Carol Underground is the laundry Doin’ other folks clothes Some of it unclaimed Or desperately wanted Lined up in rows Like some folks you know Put your tongue in my mouth Put your tongue in my mouth It’s not what you're thinking Put your sibilance in there Put your sibilance in there Ya got me believin’ Ya got me believin’ With your tongue my mouth With your tongue my mouth I could say better things With your tongue my mouth With your tongue my mouth I would be a better man Shapes of words to come my way Shapes of words to come my way Shapes of words to come my way ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Like That Anymore ° They don’t make ‘em like that anymore Streamlined in a hurry Or in a mess Like your desk All the cute, cute things within things Like the whole world’s a Russian nesting doll Or a beautiful Japanese lunchbox We waltzed around showrooms Dishing on designs of dishes and flatware (Or her flat hair, oh god get help) This curve is exquisite That shaft is the best I didn’t know they still made smiles like yours Or hands holding umbrellas like yours And when did they start making rain Like this anyway I see the sky is still blue I see you are still you And me I’m just me And now we’re caught up I didn’t know they still made smiles like yours Or hands holding umbrellas like yours And when did they start making rain Like this anyway I don’t hate the young And I don’t hate the new But if we can’t eat it What’s the use Yeah, what's the use ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Pass 04:00 video
Pass I’m not quoting I’m not praying I’m incanting And summoning I’m not just stealing I’m stealing well I’m just feeling From behind your eyes I’m not working I’m not playing Barely breathing Just saying I’d give my heart To the front rows I’d give them a standing O But they’re not here No no no no no They’re not here babe Life is still rich And we are so porous What else can we do What else is there for us This ain’t gonna last It’s gonna pass This ain’t gonna last I’d give my heart To the front rows I’d give them a standing O But they’re not here No no no no no They’re not here babe This ain’t gonna last It’s gonna pass This ain’t gonna last It’s gonna pass This ain’t gonna last It’s gonna pass This ain’t gonna last It’s gonna pass ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Taste of Water We’ve come on white flowers Long and forever We listen to beaches In their tan and sandy silence The aging towers Of European cities Their rocky spines Face the sea Are we red as the sun Are we bleached as a shell Is that the smell Of water That I taste That I hear That I fear Going under Standing in sand Dark as coffee grounds As brown as your eyes Or that kid near the shore We’re swathed in heat We bathe in ozone We’re swathed in heat We bathe in ozone My shadow the same color As your own My shadow the same color As your own ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Monday Girl Sometimes you know who’s leavin’ And sometimes you don’t Sometimes we keep believin’ In the thief of believin’ We move ourselves And we get moved on You said lover it’s over As we stretched out on the lawn You pulled out of our railroad flat You said there’s no room to move And that was that There’s no rooms at all So I see you Yet I’m not you As you walk away from me How can this be Monday girl I’m there with you In every madness Monday girl I still live here in before When I could hold back the world When it’s not acting fair To my Monday girl Sometimes I was your heavy weather Sometimes you were my noise in the line Sometimes Metal Machine Sometimes a Coney Island tune You just shake your head And leave me to ruin I stand here like a rake Overturning rot Monday girl I’m there with you In every madness Monday girl I still live here in before When I could hold back the world When it’s not acting fair To my Monday girl ©2020 All Rights Reserved

Instead 03:33 video
Instead I can’t help but sway As I hear that song I long for the days When we all would just pile on As you walk down the street Let me hold onto your thumb Or at least keep it in reach For the prodigal and dumb It’s like I got the all clear From some very queer commands My systems go Your systems slow As you walk down the street Let me hold onto your thumb Or at least keep it in reach For the prodigal and dumb We lost interest in the hardest part In the middle years So far from home A life apart As you clutch your heart As you clutch your heart And declare I can’t see I can’t help but sway As I hear that song I long for the days When we all would just pile on Before the shambling years And the unshared tears And the jettisoned bond ©2020 All Rights Reserved

about

TEENXIS is the Sixteenth album by Danger Painters and crazy as it sounds; it’s our 3rd album of 2020. Danger Painters began in 2008 as the project of Michael Barron and Bob Boilen, founding members of the D.C. band Tiny Desk Unit www.bobboilen.info/tinydeskunit from the late 1970s. For years starting in 2008, we’d create a new album every February, part of the RPM Challenge, to make an album in a month. This year there was not only the annual February challenge but an April challenge to accommodate all the musicians likely off the road and at home.

We made Ex Ivy in February, THANK SPEAK LOVE THIS RECORD in April, and we couldn’t stop. So the current Danger Painter lineup of Michael Barron, Bob Boilen, KD Lay, and Bill Harvey created TEENXIS over the next four months (quite a luxury to have more time.) It’s a somewhat more solemn affair, still steeped in swirling sound and lyrical storytelling. I think it’s our best work to date. - Bob Boilen
